Family Medicine (General Practice) in Australia or
New Zealand can be a very challenging and
fascinating experience. General Practice here is
very similar to that in other westernised
countries with most GPs having patient list sizes
between 500 to 2000 and providing a full range of
primary care services to them.
In some practices, some GPs may choose to
provide obstetric services, minor surgery clinics
and may even provide some anaesthetic services to
local hospitals.
It is the joy of being deeply involved in an
Australian or NZ community that attracts so many
doctors from all over the world here. There is no
better way of learning about life and society
in Australia and New Zealand than by working as a
community Family Medicine Practitioner.
GPs earn their income in Australia through
Medicare rebates and private fees on a
fee-for-service basis. Some practices may offer
salaried positions where a GP is contracted to
work a fixed number of hours for a fixed salary.
In New Zealand a fully comprehensive publicly
funded Primary Care system operates where most GPs
will be salaried or will be employed on locum
contracts where they will be offered hourly rates
and they can elect to work as many hours as they
choose.
In Australia, since 1997 there have been some
restrictions on Overseas Trained doctors obtaining
Medicare rebates when working in cities and so
non-Australian doctors are restricted to working
in rural or outer Metropolitan areas if they want
to work as GPs in Australia. In New Zealand, no
such restrictions exist and GPs can freely work in
any part of the country.
IMR has preferred supplier and sole supplier
status with many GP practices in both Australia
and New Zealand and so can offer GPs the widest
choice of positions available. In addition, IMR
representatives have detailed knowledge about your
specialty and can offer advice on whether you
would like to work in a General Practice which
offers opportunities with or without:
- Obstetric Services
- Minor Surgical Operations
- Anaesthetics
- Home visits
- On-call commitments
