Obstetrics and Gynaecology opportunities in
Australia and New Zealand exist at all levels
including consultant specialist, registrar and
resident (SHO).
The practice of obstetrics and gynaecology in
Australia and New Zealand is very similar to that
in any other westernised country such as the UK or
Ireland. The surgical techniques and equipment
used are identical to what would be found in
hospitals in these other countries.
Obstetrics practice in Australia and New
Zealand conventionally consists of hospital-based
labour (maternity) wards where midwifes deliver
uncomplicated singleton normal vaginal deliveries
without doctor involvement. For all abnormal
presentations, twin pregnancies, premature or
instrumental deliveries, the obstetrics resident
and registrar (and sometimes the consultant)
become involved. All Caesareans will naturally
involve the registrar and/ or consultant.
Gynaecology practice is the same as in other
westernised countries with gynaecologists often
splitting their time between outpatient clinics
and elective surgery lists. In addition, there is
often a requirement for some on-call work where
gynaecological emergencies are attended to.
IMR has preferred supplier status with many
hospitals in both Australia and New Zealand and so
can offer obstetrics and gynaecology doctors the
widest choice of positions available. In addition,
IMR representatives have detailed knowledge about
your specialty and can offer advice on which
hospital you would like to practice in.
