Surgery opportunities in Australia and New Zealand
include:
- General Surgery
- Orthopaedic Surgery
- Urology
- Vascular Surgery
- Endocrine Surgery
- Plastic Surgery
- Cardiothoracic Surgery
- Neurosurgery
Positions at specialist (consultant) level are
commonly available in all the above
subspecialties.
At registrar or resident (SHO) level, surgical
specialty training opportunities still exist in
New Zealand and to a much lesser extent in
Australia too.
The practice of surgery in Australia and New
Zealand is very similar to that in any other
westernised country such as the UK or Ireland. The
surgical techniques and equipment used are
identical to what would be found in hospitals in
these other countries.
As a rule most surgical teams in Australia
consist of a Consultant (Specialist) plus
registrar and resident with the resident
performing the majority of the ward work.
Meanwhile the consultant and the registrar usually
cover the operating theatre, outpatient clinics
and see emergency surgical admissions.
IMR has preferred supplier status with many
hospitals in both Australia and New Zealand and so
can offer surgeons the widest choice of positions
available. In addition, IMR representatives have
detailed knowledge about your specialty and can
offer advice on whether you would like to practice
in a hospital which offers opportunities in any of
the surgical subspecialties.
