Anaesthetics Jobs

Anaesthetics Jobs in Australia and New Zealand

Anaesthetics or Anesthesiology in Australia and New Zealand is progressive, highly developed and has standards exceeding almost any other country in the world. There has been a huge investment in Anaesthesia facilities over the last 10 years resulting in most hospitals in Australia and New Zealand having the latest anaesthetic delivery machines, ultrasound machines and access to the latest drugs and equipment.

There is a growing requirement for Anaesthetists in Australia and New Zealand, due to both the expanding roles of the Anaesthetist (many Intensive Care Units and pain services are now Anaesthetist-led) and also the growth in the number of perioperative procedures performed.

This increase in demand for Anaesthetists has been recognised by both the Federal Government and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), resulting in an increase in the number of trainees being accepted for anaesthetic training from both onshore and overseas.

Anaesthesia in Australia and New Zealand is similar to the practice in the UK and Ireland where all Anaesthetists are medically trained and assisted by an anaesthetic assistant (in Australia and New Zealand the assistant is usually an Anaesthetic Nurse, but occasionally can be a technician similar to an ODP).

Most Anaesthetists work 38 to 40 hours in Australasia and there is usually some on-call requirement. In Australia and New Zealand, Anaesthetists are usually employed to cover theatre and a pain service. Intensive Care (ICU) is usually covered by a separate group of Intensivists (who are commonly of an anaesthetic background). It is extremely unusual for Anaesthetists to be required to look after both ICU and operating theatres.

There is no doubt that, being at the forefront of the Anaesthetics world, Australia and New Zealand can offer unique challenges and opportunities for doctors at all levels of experience.

With preferred supplier status amongst the majority of hospitals in both Australia and New Zealand, you can be assured that IMR will offer you the widest choice of opportunities possible. At IMR we have a dedicated Anaesthetics division, meaning that our Medical Recruitment Specialists can offer unmatched knowledge and advice on:

  • General Anaesthesia
  • Paediatric Anaesthesia
  • Obstetric Anaesthesia
  • Cardiac Anaesthesia
  • Neuro-Anaesthesia
  • ICU cover
  • Pain Management Clinics

The international qualifications and higher specialist training programs that are often viewed as favourably comparable by ANZCA, and may allow you to practice as a Consultant Anaesthetist in Australia or New Zealand, are as follows:

UK Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA)
Ireland Fellowship of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (FFARCS)
USA Certificate of the American Board of Anaesthesiology (ABA)
Canada Fellowship in Anaesthetics of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC)
South Africa Fellowship of the College of Anaesthetists – (FCA) (SA)
Master of Medicine (Anaes.)
Hong Kong Fellowship of the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists - (FHKCA)

Other qualifications can be assessed on a case-by-case basis. In addition, we have multiple vacancies for Anaesthetics Registrars and SHOs (Residents) in both Australia and New Zealand. For further details or to discuss your individual requirements please contact us.
