General (Internal) Medicine Jobs in Australia and New Zealand

As with many specialties, General Medicine in Australia and New Zealand is a well developed area of Medicine and training in all Medical specialties falls under the supervision of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). Otherwise known in North America as Internal Medicine, the Australasian system generally uses the umbrella term “General Medicine” to describe the practice of Internal Medicine in adult patients. The following are the major Medical subspecialty disciplines::

  • Cardiology
  • Respiratory Medicine
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Neurology
  • Nephrology
  • Rheumatology
  • Haematology
  • Oncology

Enhanced funding has ensured that facilities in Australia and New Zealand maintain cutting edge technology and access to the latest equipment and machinery. Training through the Royal Australasian College of Physicians is recognised as one of the most comprehensive programs in the world, and in addition, is highly accessible for overseas trained doctors to join.

As a general rule, the practice of General Medicine and subspecialties in Australia and New Zealand is very similar to that in any other first class health system country, such as the UK or Ireland. These countries have adopted an evidence based approach as the direction that clinical medical practice is heading, utilising the most effective elements of other health systems comparable to our own.

Australia and New Zealand are well known around the world for having modern and progressive protocols and guidelines that govern the overall practice of Medicine. In addition, Australia is renowned for being at the forefront of technological advances in Internal Medicine, particularly in interventional cardiology (PCI), imaging techniques and interventional neurology.

Whilst positions are commonly available at Consultant level for each of the major subspecialties listed above, there are also many positions for General Medicine Physicians or Internists, with or without a “special interest” in another subspecialty.

RACP often view the following international qualifications as comparable to the RACP program, and after assessment, may allow you to practice as a Consultant in Australia or New Zealand:

UK MRCP / FRCP (London, Ireland, Edinburgh or Glasgow) plus Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) issued by the Specialist Training Authority of the Medical Royal Colleges or a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) issued by the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board, UK
USA Certificate of the American Board of Internal Medicine or other subspecialty Board Certifications plus experience as a Board Certified Physician or additional postgraduate Fellowship certifications
Canada Fellowship in Internal Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
South Africa FCP (SA) Fellowship of the College of Physicians of South Africa
MMed (Int) Masters in Internal Medicine
Ireland MRCPI (Royal College of Physicians of Ireland) plus Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST) in General Internal Medicine issued by the Irish Committee on Higher Medical Training (ICHMT)

Other international qualifications are assessed on a case-by-case basis, and we are more than happy to provide an initial assessment based on our knowledge prior to you contacting the RACP.

For Registrars or SHOs (Residents), there are many fantastic opportunities in both Australia and New Zealand including longer term training prospects with the RACP. Overseas doctors only require an RACP approved appointment to join the program here, and in turn the majority of positions are often accredited by overseas college programs for those doctors wishing to complete a rotation here and then return home.

At IMR, we have a dedicated General Medicine division, meaning that our Medical Recruitment Specialists can offer unmatched knowledge and advice on any of the Medical subspecialties.
