There is also ample opportunity to expand clinical services in public and private sectors. The unit currently provides general inpatient and outpatient services including a Liver Clinic and has a growing clinical research program. A busy endoscopy service is provided jointly by physicians and surgeons and additional endoscopy sessions will support new appointees. Psychiatry Registrars required to work in Brisbane in an accredited training position. This is a general psychiatric unit which involves both community and inpatient work.  The Unit is accredited for psychiatric training by the Australian/New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and group training and individual supervision is provided.  There is a Clinical Director of Psychiatry, Staff Specialists and Visiting medical Specialists.  There are 4 teams in the Unit – psycho-geriatrics team, rural team and general psychiatry teams. The service has an inpatient unit and runs its outpatient clinics at the local Community Health Centres.  The Unit has close associations with The specialist psychiatric hospital in the District.  There is also a Consultation Liaison Service and a Child and Youth Mental Health Service.

You are rostered for 8- hours a fortnight and accrue one day off per month.  The normal start time is 8am and the finishing time is 4.30pm.  This includes a half hour unpaid “lunch break”.  There is one PHO or Registrar rostered on a long shift (8am – 8pm) each day and all Registrars and PHOs will be allocated night duty (8pm – 8am).  Accrued days off may be accumulated and taken as a week’s leave.

This main hospital in the mental health service is a friendly acute teaching hospital, affiliated with the University of Queensland. It is set in green hills 15kms inland of the surf beaches of the Sunshine Coast and 100kms north of Brisbane. Inland lie rainforests and waterfalls in the Blackall Range, a few kilometres south the Glass house Mountains and Pumicestone passage, and a few kilometres north Noosa, and beyond that Cooloola National Park, Rainbow Beach and Fraser Island. The location is – not surprisingly – Australia’s favourite holiday destination.

The hospital has approx 350 beds including a 10-bedded ICU and a 10-bedded CCU/HDU, and a 9-cotted SCBU. All major specialties are represented apart from neurosurgery and cardiac surgery. ICU, theatres and the Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) were moved to a new purpose-built block in 2002. DEM is staffed by eight emergency physicians, sees in excess of 36 000 patients each year with a high trauma load, and receives patients from a helicopter critical care transport service. There are six operating theatres one of which is equipped and staffed to run 24/7.

The Hospital runs a great teaching program for junior doctors, with growing reputation over the past years and decades, now based in a custom-built hi-tech auditorium. GPs would be employed by the community owned Primary Health Organisation (HPHO) in this area. This town has around 30,000 residents and is just over an hour drive from Wellington (with a vibrant arts and culture base) and 45 minutes from the Palmerston North area's base hospital. The community is a rural area known for having spectacular mountain/bush walks and long sandy beaches at its door steps - 15 minutes to sea and mountains. Just over 2 hours drive north is the Taupo and Ruepehu areas where there is snow skiing and trout fishing.
 
The PHO is establishing this new general practice which will have 3-4 GPs and includes 0.3 FTE clinical leadership and training role. The health centre was opened 18 months ago. It includes general practice suites, a large treatment area, radiology, pharmacy, 24 bed general ward and a 4 bed birthing unit; both of which are staffed by other doctors and nurses. A long list of visiting specialists reguarly holds clinics at the health centre including a community cardiologist who does exercise ECGs on site.
 
The PHO runs a suite of lifestyle programs (with exercise, smoking cessation and health promotion advisors) and has specialist nursing staff in diabetes, oncology, respiratory, cardiology alongside a diabetes podiatrist and dietician service. This practice is currently seeking a Vocationally Registered GP (FRACGP) or equivalent to join their practice and assist in the treatment of individuals and their families. The successful GP must be able to deal with cases such as minor surgery, cardiovascular and respiratory medicine, women's health, paediatrics, geriatrics and accident and emergency including stabilisation of acute serious medical and surgical conditions for transfer to the nearest hospital.

The position is fulltime with the flexibility of hours. A 2 year commitment would be ideal however the practice will consider a 1 year contract with a view to extension. The successful applicant can expect a salary between $180,000 and $250,000AUD (% of billings) and the practice will offer relocation assistance to a value of $5000AUD. The practice also offers a fully furnished house for 12 months (with a view to extension) and other benefits may be available.

You will be part of a Medical Student teaching programme associated with the faculty of the Otago Medical School.
