Obstetrics and Gynaecology Jobs in Australia and New Zealand

There are many wonderful opportunities to develop, extend or expand on your Obstetrics and Gynaecology work experience in Australia or New Zealand, with a broad range of positions available to suit a variety of doctors.

Given the large landmass of Australia and New Zealand compared to the relatively small population densities, there are many areas outside of major cities that still require full obstetric services. Some of these areas are serviced by the larger city facilities, whilst there are also rural services that operate from regional bases and cover large areas of remote communities.

The practice of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Australia and New Zealand is very similar to that in any other modern health system country, such as the UK or Ireland. Whilst techniques remain consistent to other first class medical systems, substantial investments by both governments have ensured that facilities and technology remain cutting edge.

This, combined with an increased interest from both local doctors and International Medical Graduates, has led to a rise in the amount of funded research being undertaken and has firmly stamped both Australia and New Zealand as being at the forefront of the medical world as far as Obstetrics and Gynaecology is concerned.

Obstetrics practice in the public health sectors in Australia and New Zealand conventionally consists of hospital based labour (maternity) wards where midwives often deliver uncomplicated singleton normal vaginal deliveries without doctor involvement. For all abnormal presentations, twin pregnancies, premature or instrumental deliveries, the Obstetrics SHO/ Resident, Registrar and often the Consultant, become involved. All Caesareans will naturally involve the Registrar and/ or Consultant.

Private practice in Australia and New Zealand is a Consultant-led service with patients being under the direct care of a Consultant Obstetrician. This nominated Consultant will oversee the antenatal, peri-partum and post-natal care for the patient creating an excellent platform for continuity of care. In-vitro fertilisation is widely available in Australasia through private Obstetricians where teams of Consultants work together to provide a holistic service from conception to delivery.

Gynaecology practice is generally very similar to other first class health system countries, with Gynaecologists often splitting their time between outpatient clinics and elective surgery lists. In addition to this, there is often a requirement for some on-call work where Gynaecological emergencies are attended to.

With preferred supplier status amongst the majority of hospitals in both Australia and New Zealand, you can be assured that IMR will offer you the widest choice of opportunities possible. At IMR, we have a dedicated Obstetrics and Gynaecology division, meaning that our Medical Recruitment Specialists can offer unmatched knowledge and advice on your ideal role.

Postgraduate qualifications in which the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) often deem as comparable to the RANZCOG program, and after assessment, may allow you to practice as a Consultant in Australia or New Zealand include:

UK MRCOG (Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists)
FRCOG (Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists)
USA Certificate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists
Canada Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, Obstetrics and Gynaecology
South Africa Fellowship of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of South Africa: FCOG(SA) and/or Master of Medicine (MMed) in Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Ireland MRCPI Obstetrics & Gynaecology  (Institute of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists,  Royal College of Physicians of Ireland)

Other qualifications can be assessed on a case-by-case basis, and in addition to this there are multiple vacancies available at Registrar or SHO/ Resident level. Contact us today to discuss your personal preferences and requirements, and we would be delighted to get started on your Obstetrics and Gynaecology career in Australia or New Zealand.
