Paediatrics Jobs in Australia and New Zealand

Paediatrics in Australia and New Zealand is practiced in a manner very similar to that of the majority of other first class health system countries such as the UK or Ireland. Both Australia and New Zealand have adopted an evidence based approach as the direction that clinical medical practice is heading, utilising the most effective elements of other health systems comparable to our own.

An increased need has resulted in an increase in funding for research and development opportunities, ensuring that both the Australian and New Zealand system stays at the forefront of the medical world. The Paediatric hospitals around both countries enjoy unprecedented community respect and recognition for their services.

Due to the sheer size and low population density of Australia, most of the states tend to have at least one major Paediatric or Children's Hospital, and these inevitably see most of the Paediatric admissions. Having said this, there are still some general hospitals which see both Adults and Children, particularly in the larger regional cities.

In New Zealand, many of the hospitals are geared for both general Adult and Paediatric patients, and further to this, usually have access to a regional referral centre for complex cases or for the regional Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

Children’s Hospitals in both Australia and New Zealand have been the subject of worldwide praise for revolutionary findings and groundbreaking procedures developed and performed successfully, leading to well deserved recognition for some of Australasia’s top Paediatricians.

Increasingly, most Paediatricians are subspecialised although many hospitals still employ General Paediatricians. Some of the international Paediatrics qualifications that are often viewed as comparable and may allow you to work in Australia and New Zealand as a Consultant include:

UK MRCPCH , MRCP (Paeds), FRCP (Paeds) [London, Ireland, Edinburgh or Glasgow] plus the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) issued by the Specialist Training Authority of the Medical Royal Colleges or a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) issued by the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board UK
USA Certificate of the American Board of Paediatrics plus experience as a Board Certified Paediatrician or additional postgraduate Fellowship certifications
Canada Specialist Certificate and Fellowship in Paediatrics from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
South Africa FCP (SA) Fellowship of the College of Physicians of South Africa
MMed (Paeds) Masters in Paediatrics
Ireland MRCPI (Royal College of Physicians of Ireland) plus Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST) in Paediatrics issued by the Irish Committee on Higher Medical Training (ICHMT)

Other international qualifications are assessed on a case-by-case basis, and we are more than happy to provide an initial assessment based on our knowledge prior to you contacting the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).

In addition, we have multiple vacancies for Paediatrics Registrars and SHOs in both Australia and New Zealand. International Medical Graduates are encouraged to join the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) training program in an accredited training position and there are fantastic opportunities throughout Australasia for developing your career.
