New Zealand Healthcare System

The Healthcare System

New Zealand boasts one of the world's most well developed and comprehensive healthcare systems which, like Australia's, was initially modeled somewhat on the UK system.

New Zealand's Public Health System is the major provider to its community. This is a comprehensive free-of-charge healthcare service for all New Zealand citizens covering both hospital-based and community-based medical services. For those that wish to work outside of the public system, a small array of private healthcare facilities are also available.

The clinical practice in New Zealand tends to be a mixture of the UK evidence-based healthcare model and the more innovative US style of medicine, meaning that you can reap the benefits of both.

The public hospitals in New Zealand tend to be very well equipped with all the latest technology and facilities, and these are constantly being revamped to remain cutting edge. Due to the large increase in the availability of protocols, clinical guidelines, evidence based methodology and innovative research, it is widely acknowledged that the clinical practice in New Zealand is a first class medical system.

Due to the fact that New Zealand boasts a relatively large land mass area compared to the population, the role of a Family Medicine or General Practitioner (GP) in many parts of New Zealand is extended beyond that performed by GPs in other parts of the world. It is not uncommon for Family Practitioners to perform minor operations, obstetrics and even limited anaesthetics services in some cases.

In New Zealand, you will find that healthcare workers are often part of professional groups representing nurses and doctors. Most of the hospital directors and senior managerial staff are qualified medical practitioners or nurses themselves, and this often means that the interests of the healthcare employees are well represented within the larger public facilities.

As a rule, New Zealand patients and doctors tend to be more laid back than in other parts of the world, creating a very informal and friendly working environment that most doctors find very enjoyable.

New Zealand may be one of the youngest countries in the world, but you will find a health system and working environment far beyond its years. For work-life balance in a "choose your own adventure" environment, you can't beat New Zealand!
