Salaries & Tax

Salaries in New Zealand

In New Zealand, doctors' salaries are set by the Government and are consistent on a sliding scale across the whole country. The salaries differ depending on how many rostered hours your particular role requires that you do per week, and also depending on how many years work experience you have after completing your medical degree or postgraduate training program.

You can't really take your potential salary in New Zealand without also considering the outstanding work-life balance (better than most other countries), and of course the fact that New Zealand boasts an exceptionally low cost of living compared to its westernised neighbours.

If you take a medical job in Australia or New Zealand through IMR, you will be directly contracted by the facility you work for. At no stage will you be an employee of IMR (nor will we adjust your wages in any way, shape or form) and this means that you will be paid the same rates as your Australasian colleagues – just another way that we make sure you get the best benefits you can by working with IMR.

Seniority Approximate Basic Salary (NZD) Estimated Salary after average overtime (NZD)
Resident/ SHO 70,000 – 80,000 85,000 – 95,000
Registrar 90,000 – 110,000 105,000 – 125,000
General Practitioner 130,000 – 180,000 150,000 – 210,000
Consultant (Specialist) 150,000 – 215,000 170,000 – 300,000

Your basic salary assumes a working week of 40 hours – anything after this will be paid at penalty rates. So, in reality you have a fair amount of control over how much you earn based on exactly how many work hours you are willing to do. Most facilities will have some degree of flexibility when it comes to additional hours.
