Surgery Jobs

Surgery Jobs in Australia and New Zealand

The practice of Surgery in Australia and New Zealand is very similar to that in any other first class medical system country such as the UK or Ireland. Over the past years substantial investments by both governments have ensured that facilities and technology remain cutting edge.

This, combined with an increased interest from doctors both locally and overseas, has led to a rise in the amount of funded surgical research being undertaken and has firmly stamped Australasia as an area at the forefront of the surgical world.

Departments in both Australia and New Zealand have been the subject of worldwide praise for revolutionary findings and groundbreaking procedures developed and performed successfully, leading to well deserved recognition for some of Australasia's top surgeons.

As a rule, most hospital based surgical teams in Australia consist of a Consultant (Specialist) with Registrar and SHO (Resident) support. The SHO would generally perform the majority of the ward work, whilst the Consultant and Registrar usually cover the operating theatre, outpatient clinics and see emergency surgical admissions.

Elective surgery in Australia is shared between the public and private systems, with approximately 55% of all operations being performed in the private sector. In New Zealand, however, elective surgery is mostly performed in the public sector with only around 12% of operations being performed privately.

Consultant level positions in most subspecialties are readily available in both Australia and New Zealand. Trainee positions at Registrar or SHO level can often be more competitive and more commonly New Zealand offers middle grade and junior doctors more training opportunities. It is recommended that international medical graduates should initially take up an unaccredited Registrar role in an accredited department to gain experience when first relocating to Australia or New Zealand.

With preferred supplier status amongst the majority of hospitals in both Australia and New Zealand, you can be assured that IMR will offer you the widest choice of opportunities possible.
